Video: Car Magazine Co-Drives The 2008 Nissan GT-R

Car magazine’s Ben Barry must have felt like a ravenous child in candy store when Nissan’s marketing boss Shingo Suzuki (now that’s funny) unexpectedly suggested that he jump into the GT-R’s passengers seat for a quick spin. See, while Car and a bunch of other major auto magazines were invited by Nissan to photograph the 2008 GT-R in Hokkaido, it was on a strictly “look and drool but don’t even think about driving” basis. Now that sucks. (Links: GT-R Promo Video click here, images & specs click here)

2008 Ford Focus ST Image - Is It Real?

We discovered this image of the 2008 Ford Focus ST floating around the net this morning and while we can’t guarantee that it’s authentic, it sure looks like it is. While the facelifted European Ford Focus was presented in September at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show (click here for details & images) Ford hadn’t released any details or pictures of the sporty 2008 Focus ST. The current version is equipped with Volvo’s 2.5-litre turbocharged, 5-cylinder unit delivering 220 Hp. So, what do think; is the picture real or is it the work of an excellent photoshop artist?

2007 SEMA: Chevy V8 Powered Quadracycle

Bourget's Shredder 2008 F-80 Quadracycle might look like a hot-rod inspired toy but this quad promises to deliver a serious kick in the “arse” if you’re willing to depart a hefty $90,000 (€62,500) when it goes on sale next year. SEMA Show: Chrysler Town & Country Black Jack

Chrysler let out the first images of the 2008 Town & Country Black Jack ahead of the customized MPV’s SEMA Show premiere on October 30. The American carmaker insists that the Town & Country Black Jack draws its inspiration from the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. I happen to stay at the pyramid-themed Luxor Hotel in 2006 and honestly, I can’t say that I see any resemblance, but whatev.

The Black Jack sits on one-off 20-in. wheels tucked around a set of Brembo SRT brakes and matched with an adjusted ride height. The van’s body is covered in a custom Amber-Black Pearl paint with the hood featuring a ghosted "Black Jack" decal while chrome accents complement the billet-style grill. Inside the Black Jack gets LED lighting, dual panoramic-style roof openings while a leather- wrapped curved bench replaces the third-row seats. -Continued after the jump

As you’d expect, the Town & Country Black Jack is equipped with a high-end entertainment system that features two KICKER 10-in. L7 sub woofers tied to a 1250-watt amplifier, two pairs of 6-in. speakers and a four-channel 700-4 amplifier combined with rear-mounted 37-in. LCD flat screen and two 7-in. overhead monitors. The latter are connected to three hidden overhead digital cameras so forget about cheating...

2007 Tokyo Show: Ford Escape Adventure Concept

Finally, we managed to find the worldwide premiere that Ford promised us for the 2007 Tokyo Show. Back in September when we tried to shed some light on the Tokyo show premieres (click here) we believed that Ford would most probably unveil the Asian version of the Verve concept. Instead the American carmaker chose to show off a concept version of the Escape SUV (Maverick in Europe and other markets).

According to Ford, the Escape Adventure Concept features several 'teasing' changes to draw attention to future possibilities, hinting at styling opportunities that can be quickly introduced to market either as production changes or as accessories. These include a revised front incorporating a three-bar grille with silver-accented air intakes and larger headlights. In the rear-end, the Escape concept gets restyled horizontal (instead of vertical) LED tail lamps and a diffuser. The prototype is also equipped with 18x7-inch alloy wheels with 235/60R18 tires. -Continued after the jump

"Our goal from the start was to accentuate the Escape's on-road presence with styling changes that would enhance its appeal as a crossover SUV. To achieve this, we focused mainly on the grille and head light areas," said Paul Gibson, Chief Designer, Asia Pacific and Africa who was responsible for the exterior facelift for MY06 Escape.

2008 Ford Model T Concept by Designer David Beasley

The Ford Model T, one of the most important vehicles in automotive history will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. With this in mind, David Beasley, an industrial designer with a Master in Design from Coventry University and a Master in Art from the Royal College of Art, created a new interpretation of the “Tin Lizzie”. According to David, the 2008 Model T is inspired by modern architecture and proposed in different body variants (2+2 'dickie' coupe, a 2-seater pick-up and a more versatile and practical 4-seater wagon). -Continued after the jump

"2008 bears a special date for Ford - the 100th birthday of the Model T. For this reason, I believe that the perfect time to replace the Ka or Fiesta and give the customer an affordable 'halo' product is next year”, said David. I have designed this around contemporary architecture and graphic influences with the intention of creating a fresh yet heritage inspired design."

Available in Japan from December 6 and the rest of the world in 2008, the Nissan GT-R promises to offer more adrenaline than a Porsche 911 Turbo at half the price. Something tells us that Nissan intends to keep its promise. For official specs and high-res images, click here.

2007 SEMA: Jeep Wrangler Ultimate With 6.4-liter V8 Hemi

Jeep has dropped more info on the Wrangler Ultimate concept which we first saw last May along with the JT Concept (Wrangler pickup – click here) at the Chrysler Proving Ground. Based on the four door 2008 Wrangler Unlimited, the SEMA Show concept is equipped with a Chrysler’s 6.4-liter (392 cu.i) V8 Hemi crate engine. Though Jeep hasn’t specified which of the three available 392 Hemi engines has been chosen for the Ultimate, we’re guessing it’s the 525 Hp strong fuel injected version.

Engine aside, the concept also features an enhanced suspension with a 3-in. lift to fit the immense 35-in. BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires mounted on 18-in. alloys, chromed exterior details, Nappa leather interior and a multimedia infotainment system. -Details and high res images after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: The Jeep Wrangler Ultimate with 392 HEMI® from Mopar
Designer: Mark Allen, Chief Designer – Jeep/Dodge Truck Studios

The name says it all.

The Jeep Wrangler Ultimate with 392 HEMI from Mopar is a concept vehicle that answers the question "how far can you go with the new Jeep Wrangler?" Beginning with the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon®, the design team set out to create the best of the best – combining high style and materials with the best off-road machine ever offered by Jeep.

The suspension is enhanced with a 3-in. lift to clear the massive 35-in. BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires mounted on custom, polished Alcoa Forged 18-in. wheels. The exterior is chromed out courtesy of Mopar:
fuel filler door

taillamp guards

tubular side steps

exterior mirrors

tow hooks

door handles

hood hinges

fascia overlays

To complete the look, the exterior is coated in a wildly experimental 'Liquid Charcoal Pearl Coat' paint.

The Wrangler Ultimate's real story is its interior. Taking cues from rugged adventure sports bags and accessories, the team created a high style and detailed interior compartment that is as tough and beautiful as the exterior. Seating surfaces are clad in durable orange mesh fabric and dark slate gray Nappa/Province leather – bound with a heavy black-leather baseball stitch. Instrument panel details are treated to a stunning Argent Pearl/Satin Silver paint combination, reinforcing the machine character for which Jeep is known. The interior is also home to the exclusive MyGIG™ Multimedia Infotainment System. There are also DVD screens for passengers in the front and rear.

To provide authentic performance on the trail, the team also dropped in a 392 HEMI crate motor.

Mercedes Museum Hosts The World’s Strongest Man Made Tornado

The Mercedes-Benz museum, located in Stuttgart, Germany, is not only unique due to the vehicles or the distinctive design of the building but also because it (officially) hosts the “strongest artificially generated tornado in the world”. The record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records representative Olaf Kuchenbecker.

However, despite what you may think, the 34-metre-high artificial tornado does not act as a decorative piece of the museum; it’s actually functional as it serves to eliminate smoke in the event of a fire. See, in order to achieve approval from authorities, fire protection regulations required all areas outside the fire level to be smoke-free in the event of smoke emission. However, due to the open-plan structure of the museum, the exhibition areas are connected to each other without any fire zones via an interior courtyard and ramps. -Continued after the jump

This meant that the architectures and engineers had to take an innovative approach to solve the problem. The answer came in the form of a unique smoke elimination system that uses the principle of the tornado force. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building. Cool to say the least.

Volvo P1800 Clocks 2.6 Million Miles!

Irv Gordon, a retired Long Island Science teacher has managed to clock an amazing 2.6 million miles or about 4.2 million km on his red 1966 Volvo P1800, a model which become famous from the 60's TV series "The Saint". The 67-year-old purchased the classic Volvo coupe in June 1966 driving 1,500 miles in the first 48 hours.

From there on Forest, err, sorry I mean Gordon, just drove and drove logging 500,000 miles / 800,000 km in 10 years while in 1998 with 1.69 million miles, or 2.57 million km, he made the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle. Now Gorden has set his eyes on hitting the 3 million mark in the next five years. -Continued after the jump

"My goal is to reach three million miles in the next five years," Gordon said. "But, whether I reach that mark is more up to me than it is the car. The car's parts may be able to take it, but I'm not so sure about my own.

"I turn 72 on July 15, 2012," he added. "That seems like a nice day to clock three million and park the car once and for all. It will be a fantastic testament to the engineering genius of Volvo as well as to the resiliency of folks my age.

"I'll also feel comfortable that three million miles is a record that no one will ever be able to reach in the same car," Gordon continued. "That is, unless Barry Bonds decides to start driving his car more after he retires from baseball."

Notably Gordon is unsure what to do with his P1800 Coupe if he actually manages to hit three million miles -though he has considered selling it for... a dollar per each mile he's driven.

"I also think it should go in a nice, cozy museum where people will get to enjoy seeing the car that beat the odds - all with the same engine, same radio, same axles, same transmission and of course the same driver," Gordon said.

"So, maybe I'll sell it. Maybe I'll donate it to a museum," he concluded. "Who knows? Maybe I'll keep driving it."

Press Release - New Model IMPREZA WRX STI : Sale of FIA Group N Rally Base Vehicle

Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has decided on the standard specification of the FIA (International Automobile Federation) Group N car with the new Impreza WRX STI, sold by FHI as a base vehicle. They will be sold at specially agreed motorsport bases (STI base teams) in Europe, South Africa, etc. for use as rally base cars.

The new IMPREZA WRX STI (vehicle type: Subaru CBA-GRB) that went on sale on October 24th for the domestic market is a 5 door car with the combination of Subaru’s unique symmetrical AWD chassis layout and high power horizontally-opposed 2 liter turbo engine. They have continued development for the customer-prepared Group N rally cars to be presented in 2008 or after, exchanging information with the FHI production car development team, to improve elements and the competitiveness necessary for rallying. As soon as the base vehicles go on sale, the FIA VO parts for Group N and the STI sport parts for increased competitiveness will be released. FHI has decided that they will apply for FIA Group N status for the new IMPREZA WRX STI, and are aiming to get approval on January 1st 2008.

The new IMPREZA WRX STI features improved basic chassis functionality, including increased maneuverability through modifications to the front suspension geometry, better stability in straight line movement through a larger wheelbase, and better road-holding through the adoption of a double wishbone rear suspension. In addition, by adopting an active valve control system (AVCS) that sucks in emissions, an electronically controlled throttle, strengthened conrods and such, they have increased engine performance ? mainly the power output and torque, allowing for even more precise engine settings. The 3-mode SI drive and multi-mode DCCD (drivers control differential) - which control the different characteristics of the engine
fs torque - have computerized controls, allowing users infinite possibilities in rally competition. In addition to all this, they have cut back on the rear overhang, altered the distribution of weight in the front and rear, raised the centre of gravity, and optimized the height of the roll centre, all of which contribute to the increased performance in rallying of the new machine.

STI has been working on the development of the new IMPREZA WRX STI Group N model for a long time, cooperating with the previously mentioned STI base teams, finalizing the standard specification after development tests carried out in Europe and South America. The results of rough gravel tests in South America and the twisty smooth gravel tests in Northern Europe have shown that the new model has better performance through improved times recorded on these tests.

The Group N base vehicle, based on the domestic Japanese model, will be delivered to STI base teams around the world for the 2008 season.

STI Group N project

STI started the Group N project in 2003 to expand its business within the FIA Group N category, the most popular class in world rallying. They appointed George Donaldson from the UK as the local general manager of STI, for research, marketing, and other motor sports-related purposes in Europe. He has mainly been undertaking support for IMPREZA entrants in the FIA Production car World Rally Championship (P-WRC), local FIA competitions, and other domestic rallies in various countries.

From 2004, STI created specially agreed motorsport bases called
gSTI base teams.h Their concept is for STI and the base teams to join forces to expand Group N, and they have made marketing efforts with Prodrive from the UK and Tommi Makinen Racing from Finland.
This organization has recently made contracts with Barratero Racing from Argentina, Uspenskiy Rally Technica (Russia), Stohl Racing (Austria), and Motor Image (Singapore) in an effort to expand their international horizons. Since 2005, over 500 of the previous model IMPREZA WRX STI spec C Group N base cars (2005, 2006, and 2007 models) have been sold with the cooperation of the STI base teams.

The new IMPREZA WRX STI Group N machine has been developed in conjunction with the base teams. The development tests carried out in South America and Northern Europe after the spring of 2007 provided an extraordinary contribution to the development of the new car, as the conditions were extremely similar to those found on actual rallies.

STI base teams have worked together with STI to create a business infrastructure in Group N. In addition to their contributions in developing rally parts, the base teams manage customers and distribute both base cars and rally cars in their respective areas. Rally parts (safety mechanisms and guards) are also provided to customers by the base teams.

FIA Group N Rally Competition Parts on Sale

Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has designated that FIA (International Automobile Federation) Group N rally competition parts for the New Impreza WRX STI sold by FHI will start being sold from November 1st in Europe, South America, and other specially agreed motorsport bases (STI base teams).

Rally competition parts for the new Impreza WRX STI (vehicle type: Subaru CBA-GRB) were developed by STI with all the know-how accumulated throughout previous models. They will start being supplied as soon as the vehicle goes on sale, and able to be used after the new Impreza WRX STI becomes approved by the FIA group N homologation in January 2008. The competition parts consist of the minimal necessary core parts and VO parts; there are also newly designed parts for the full model change of the vehicle as well as existing parts for previous models. The new parts were developed in conjunction with FHI partner suppliers that provide production car parts and as a joint project with suppliers with strong international backgrounds. It has been proven that the final product has performed extremely well, from the very good results of tests carried out on both rough gravel roads in South America and twisty smooth gravel roads in Northern Europe.

The competition parts feature increased durability of rubber parts such as mounts on suspension bushes and engine gearboxes, brake systems with accomplished large volume calipers, variable proportioning valves that optimize braking and increase stability, LSD with selection of multiple operating characteristics (3 types in front and 3 types in the rear) to increase competitiveness, and pillow ball top mounts with increased strength and part life. The parts delivery system has been developed towards the 2008 season so that the end users can start preparing as soon as they get their hands on the base vehicles. The engine control unit (ECU), drivers control differential (DCCD) control units, FIA group N 32mm engine restrictors, all with the know-how of STI consolidated into them, are prepared for delivery sometime after December 1st.
