Volvo Introduces New 2.0-liter Five-Cylinder Diesel, Upgraded Six-Cylinder petrol engines

For the 2011 model year, Volvo is introducing a new five-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo diesel that will be available throughout its range while the Swedish automaker also upgraded the six-cylinder petrol engines offered on the S80, V70, XC70 and XC60.

The new five-cylinder diesel unit is in principle the same engine as the 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced (with a shorter stroke) to 2.0-liters. It will be offered in three different variants in terms of output.

In the S80, V70, XC70 and XC60, the newly developed 2.0-litre diesel produces 163HP and 400 Nm of torque. In these models the engine is badged the D3.

In the smaller C30 hatchback, S40 sedan, V50 estate and C70 coupe cabriolet, the new 2.0L unit is available in two flavors, the D3 with 150HP and 350 Nm of torque and the D4 with 177HP and 400 Nm of torque.

All the variants of the new 2.0-liter turbodiesel can be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

In addition, Volvo updated its 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged petrol T6 that now offers 304HP and 440 Nm of torque.

The six-cylinder 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has also been upgraded and features an improved crankshaft and less internal friction. It now produces 243HP and maximum torque is 320 Nm.

In order to meet US legislative requirements, Volvo also offers a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) variant of the same engine that produces 231HP and 300 Nm of peak torque.

Geneva Show: Volvo “Ocean Race Edition” Models

Volvo has launched a series of specially designed cars dedicated to the sailing competition, “Volvo Ocean Race”. The new “Ocean Race Edition” range encompasses three models the V70, XC70 and XC90. Available in two exterior colors, Ocean Blue and Electric Silver, the special edition models feature full leather upholstery in Soft Beige or Offblack, with the centre console and other details in a silk matt aluminium finish. When Volvo organised the Volvo Ocean Race the very first time in 2001-02, the company sold 4,500 special edition Volvo V70s and X70s. In conjunction with the 2005-06 race, the Ocean Blue family was extended with the Volvo XC90 and sales increased to 8,600 cars. The most recent Volvo Ocean Race Edition will reach dealers in June 2008 and Volvo expects to sell about 9,000 cars. The five largest markets are Germany, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and Japan.

Next-Generation Volvo XC90 SUV Rendering

In 2003, Volvo presented its first-ever SUV, the seven-seater XC90 which managed to prove a success despite the stiff competition of BMW X5s and Mercedes MLs. Volvo updated the XC90 in the 2007 MY with a light facelift, but in order to ensure that the XC90 will continue to sell, the Swedes will have to make plans for the second-generation model. We might not have any spy pictures of the premium SUV but the guys at Volvonews discovered a scan from the cover of the Spanish edition of Autobild magazine featuring a rendering of the new XC90 which is expected sometime in 2009 as a 2011 model.

Volvo Recalling 42,211 XC90s Due To Fire Risk

Sweden's Volvo Car Corp. is recalling 42.211 XC90 SUVs in the United States due to a potential problem with the battery. Specifically, misplaced jack crank handles under the battery bracket after battery service/maintenance could lead to a short circuit resulting to a fire. Volvo said it would ensure the handle is properly stowed and add a warning label once the affected cars are brought in for maintenance. Volvo told the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the recall covers XC90s manufactured from June 7, 2004, to May 13, 2005, at their plant in Torslanda, Sweden.

Holy Hoons! 79-year-old Broughton Bishop responsible for “Portland Icy car crash”

I’m sure that most of you remember the Icy Car Crash video that we posted a few days ago featuring a series of pinball-car-crashes in Portland. Undoubtedly, the most entertaining hoon of all was the person in the first SUV, as he made a home run on every car, or poll he found. According to Oregonlive, the West Hills Volvo XC90 driver who pinballed seven cars is a 79-year-old named Broughton Bishop. Luckily, Broughton managed to come out of the car bearing only a few scratches. But hey, what's a few scratches and a hurt ego compared to all that publicity he's receiving! 2007 Volvo XC90 Facelift

At the end of May, Volvo is going to reveal a facelifted version of its XC90 SUV (2007 model). The most important exterior changes concern the new front & rear light clusters and redesigned bumpers that give the XC90 a more aggressive look. Also, the 2007 XC90 gets new auxiliary turn signals, which are housed in the side mirrors. In the interior Volvo enhances the XC90 with new materials and chrom-plated elements.

Aesthetics aside, the most significant change of the 2007 XC90 is well hidden under its hood as the Swedish SUV gets Volvo’s new straight 6 engine that was previewed in the 2007 S80. The 3,2 litre engine produces 235 Hp and a maximum torque of 320 Nm.
