2009 BMW Z4 Spied with Retractable Hardtop in Full View

Spy photographers have managed to capture on film a lightly camouflaged prototype version of the next generation BMW Z4 performing tests in Germany without the annoying plastic armor. The new scoop photos confirm earlier reports that the new Z4 roadster will indeed have a two-piece electric folding hardtop. -Continued

However, as we've mentioned before in a previous article on the 2009 Z4 -click here for details and pics, it still remains to be seen whether BMW will offer the its sporty roadster exclusively with a retractable metal roof or if the Bavarians will follow the example of Mazda and its latest generation MX-5 / Miata which is available in both roadster (canvas roof) and coupe-convertible (retractable hard top) forms.

The line up for the Z4's same-name successor is expected to include an array of 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines, the latter in both turbocharged and normally aspirated versions, as well the M3's 420Hp 4.0-liter V8 that will be offered in the M Z4.

Our sources state that the BMW Z4 will make its world debut at the Detroit Show in January 2009, but there is a good possibility that the German automaker may introduce a pre-production prototype at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show.
